Support & User Guide
Complete help and guidance for Foot Traffic Counter
Getting Started
Foot Traffic Counter helps you measure how people move through a space. With a few taps, you can count passersby, entries, exits, and custom categories that match what you see in the real world.
This guide explains how to start a session, use In/Out tracking, work with custom fields, understand your data, and keep everything private and consistent.
Starting a Session
Create a New Session
- Open the app and tap New Session.
- (Optional) Add or confirm your location so you can compare different sites later.
- Review your observation fields and turn categories on or off based on what you want to track.
- Tap Start to begin counting.
A session runs until you tap End Session. You can run multiple sessions on different days, times, or locations and compare them later.
Recording Observations
Using the Observation Buttons
Each tile on the main screen represents a category you can count. For each person or group you observe, you can:
- Quick tap: Records a fast observation using the default settings for that tile.
- Press and hold: Opens detailed options like age group, gender, group size, or other custom fields (depending on how your app is configured).
- Add media: Attach photos, short videos, or audio notes to document context, layout, or conditions.
Observation Fields
Observation fields are the categories that appear as tiles during a session. You can choose which fields are visible so the counting screen matches your real-world needs.
- Show or hide fields you do or do not need.
- Use default fields such as passersby, entering, and exiting, or your own custom fields.
- Keep the main screen as simple as possible so you can count quickly and accurately.
In/Out Tracking (Occupancy)
The In/Out feature lets you track how many people are currently inside your defined space and how they flow in and out over time.
In (Entering)
Tap the In button whenever someone enters your store, gallery, event, or zone. Each tap increases the Inside Now count.
Out (Leaving)
Tap the Out button whenever someone leaves. Each tap decreases the Inside Now count.
Inside Now
Inside Now shows a live estimate of how many people are inside based on your taps. It is fully manual by design, reflecting what you observe rather than any automated tracking.
In/Out data helps you understand occupancy, conversion from passersby to visitors, and how busy your space is throughout the day.
What You Can Count
Foot Traffic Counter is flexible so you can match the app to your real-world environment. During a session, you can count:
- Passersby: People who walk past your location.
- Entries: People who come into your store, gallery, event, or defined space.
- Exits: People who leave your defined space.
- Custom categories: For example families, commuters, tourists, phone users, prams, cyclists, or anything else you want to track.
Understanding Your Data
Built-in Charts
The app automatically generates visual summaries of your session so you can quickly see patterns and trends.
- Passersby volume: How many people move past over time.
- In/Out patterns: How many people enter and leave, and when.
- Inside Now trends: Occupancy levels at different times.
- Demographics: Age and gender breakdowns (if you use those fields).
- Group types: Solo visitors, couples, families, or other groupings.
- Timing: Peak periods and quiet times across your observation window.
- Custom fields: Any custom categories you have configured.
Comparing Days and Locations
To compare different days, times, or locations, simply run separate sessions. You can then compare totals and patterns across:
- Weekdays vs weekends.
- Morning vs afternoon or evening.
- Different shopfronts, entrances, or sites.
- Before and after changes such as campaigns, signage, or layout.

Working with Exported Data

Privacy
Foot Traffic Counter is built around anonymous counting. You record how many people you observe, not who they are.
- No names, IDs, or personal details.
- You control whether you add any media and what it shows.
- Your data stays on your device until you choose to export or share it.
Tips for Accurate Data
Consistency
- Decide what counts as a passerby, entry, or exit before you start.
- Use consistent time blocks for your observations (for example, 30 or 60 minutes).
- Keep the same physical boundaries for each session.
- Note environmental conditions like weather, events, or construction.
Teams and Shared Work
- Agree on clear counting rules if multiple people are collecting data.
- Use the same observation fields and naming across sessions.
- Review charts together to check that counts look realistic.
Frequently Asked Questions
What can I count during a session?
You can count passers by, people who enter, and other custom categories depending on how the app is configured. The goal is to match what you observe in the real world.
Can I compare different days or locations?
Yes. By running separate sessions you can compare totals and patterns over time. This helps you see how each day, campaign, or site performs.
Is my data private?
Foot Traffic Counter focuses on anonymous counts, not identities. You count how many people you observe, not who they are.
Troubleshooting
Common Issues
The app feels slow or unresponsive
Close other apps and restart Foot Traffic Counter. Very large sessions or many photos and videos may require more processing time and available storage.
Export is not working
Check that you have enough storage space and have granted the required permissions. If a session is extremely large, try exporting a smaller set first.
Data appears to be missing
Make sure the session was properly ended and saved. Unsaved sessions may be lost if the app is closed unexpectedly by the system.
